Old fashion banana pudding? I didn’t even realize that this was “Old Fashion” growing up since it was the only way I ever ate it! When My grandmother as well as my mom said that they were making banana pudding, then we knew we were in for a treat!

So what is old fashion banana pudding?? Its homemade … using a homemade vanilla pudding recipe with a toasted meringue topping! This is the only way I knew banana pudding came for the longest time! Needless to say… when I had store bought the first time I was very disappointed!
No offense if you make it with an instant pudding mix. Its just this is how I remember having banana pudding growing up! It is slightly sweeter than most box pudding mixes and has a delicious vanilla custard taste with a fluffy meringue topping!! Yummy!
Maybe this is the way you remember it as well growing up? Perhaps you are looking to try it for the first time! I would love to hear what you think! Let me know in the comments below! You may also like this recipe for a Easy Peach Cobbler!

Instructions
Vanilla Custard
- Preheat oven to 400
- Line a 8x10 dish or medium casserole dish with vanilla wafers, then a layer of bananas; set aside.
- Using a medium size saucepan; add 2 Cups of milk and beaten egg yolks( save your egg white for the meringue) ; allow to come to a boil over medium heat then turn to medium low.
- In a small mixing bowl; mix sugar, flour, salt, and remaining 1 C of milk. Blend well; then slowly whisk into your hot mixture. Allow to simmer until thickened. About 3-5 minutes. Make sure to keep stirring to prevent burning. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla,

Meringue Topping
- Whip 3 eggs whites and cream of tartar with a Mixer over medium-high speed till it starts to look stiff. Turn mixer to a medium speed and slowly add in your sugar. Mix till soft peaks begin to form.
- Spread Meringue on top of warm pudding making sure to seal around the edges tightly. ( I like to work around edges first then fill in the center)
- Place in oven and brown for 4-6 minutes. Just till golden brown. Make sure to watch to prevent burning.
- Allow to come to room temperature then chill in refrigerator.
