In the mornings, one of the first things I ask my daughter is “What would you all like for breakfast?” and normally it is either one of three things; Oatmeal, Cereal, or Waffles! This morning she specially requested some of my Super soft Biscuits with Gravy, considering she never ask for this.. I whipped up my favorite biscuit recipe for her! O.. and my husband just happened to get to stop at the house today as I finished them off so needless to say He was very happy!

I have made a lot of biscuits with trial and error! Therefore I have had my share of nice rock hard biscuits and then the lovely flat as pancakes biscuits.. till I finally came up with these which have a lightly crisp top and a super soft middle!
Key To Super Soft Biscuits…
I wanted to add a few notes on these biscuits as I have had people say that theirs wasn’t as fluffy!
- When mixing in your dry ingredients; make sure to mix your baking powder in well before cutting in your shortening so that it is distributed evenly.
- Be sure to cut in your shortening very well until it resembles a mill or sand like texture.
- Make sure to use a Milk and Vinegar Mixture or Buttermilk.
- Do NOT over knead your dough! Just the recommended 10 is plenty!Over kneading will produce a less then soft biscuit.
- Lastly, make sure you cut them to about a 1 in. thickness .
- I Actually bought this handy little Rolling pin from amazon-Its helps ensure an even thickness. (See Pictures)
- I Personally like to roll out to about 3/8 in . thickness with this rolling pin; fold over; then lightly roll over biscuits one time with the rolling pin before cutting. This Will give your biscuit a nice crease in the middle to easily open them up! ( I’m OCD.. I know) :0
- Cut out with a 3 in. Round biscuit cutter or a cup and place side by onto a cookie sheet, pan or stone like I used here.
- Lastly, Bake in your oven at 400 for 11-13 min. They should be a light golden on top!
- Remove and Brush liberally with melted butter! Note: lately I will return them back to the oven for 1-2 minutes just to give the biscuits a buttery crisp top!
If you end up giving them a try, please let me know how they turn out below! I would love to hear your Input!
Super Soft Biscuits
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 Cup All Purpose Flour
- 1 1/2 Tablespoon Baking Powder
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1/2 Tablespoon Sugar
- 1/3 C. Shortening or Coconut Oil
- 1 C. Buttermilk or 1 Cup Milk plus 1 Tablespoon Vinegar or lemon juice
- 2 Tablespoon Butter Melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400
- Whisk all of the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl; cut in the shortening with a fork, or pastry cutter until it resembles a coarse mill.
- Pour Buttermilk into Dry ingredients or In a separate small bowl; mix milk and vinegar and then add to dry ingredients. Mix until combined. This will be gooey, so I like to flour my hands beforehand.
- Turn onto a floured surface and; knead only about 10x's. Do not over knead or over handle the dough.
- Roll out to about 1 in. thick and cut with 3 in. round biscuit cutter. Place onto large cookies sheet or into round oven pan.Note: To get a nice crease down the center of your biscuit for easy opening; roll out to about 1/2 in. then fold over in half; roll over again lightly one time with your rolling pin then cut with biscuit cutter.
- Bake 11-13 Minutes; till lightly golden on top. Remove from oven and brush with your butter.
- You can serve as is or return to oven for 1-2 more minutes to cook butter into biscuits and have buttery crisp tops!
Notes
- This recipe makes around 9-10 large Biscuits.
Love this recipe!!😊delicious and easy to make
Would it make a big difference if I used oil or maybe butter?
Hello Dorothy! You can not use oil for this but you can use butter if you prefer but I have had the best out come on these biscuits using shortening. They come out soft and fluffy with the shortening! They still taste buttery from the generous amount I use to brush them with. ☺️
Looks delicious and I’m going to try this recipe. How much shortening do I fold into flour mixture?
Sorry, I forgot to post the measurement! It’s 1/3 Cup. 😊
Okay, thanks!
I’m going to try making these tonight
Made these for my birthday boy this morning for biscuits and gravy. They were nice and soft, and delicious. Easy to make, and I had all the ingredients already at home. This is our new go to recipe.
Awe! So glad to hear! Happy birthday to your birthday boy!☺️ Things like this is what motivates me to continue! Enjoy your all’s day and hope you all make many memories that will last a lifetime.
I just made these, and they were absolutely delicious!!
So Glad you liked these Erin! They are a regular in our home! Thanks for dropping back in and letting me know!💗
This is the best biscuit recipe I have found so far! I used butter instead of shortening and they were super moist.
So glad to hear this Michaela! This is a regular recipe at our home!
This is the best recipe that I have had great success. In the instructions, it says to mix baking soda really well. This only shows baking powder. Maybe a typo?
Great recipe though!
Thanks Julie! So glad these were a success for you! Yes, that is a typo!! You can definitely tell I am a stay at home busy mom by all my mistakes!😆 Thank you for catching that, it is baking powder!
I can’t wait to try! Is the milk/vinegar a substitute for buttermilk? Just wondering which I should use if I have both.
Hi Kim! Yes, it is! You will see me using this substitute in some of my recipes. I just never have it on hand when I need it so I almost always use vinegar! ☺️ We love these biscuits, hope you enjoy them as well!
SO GOOD!!! My family and I ate them all. I made them as drop biscuits, slathered with butter and date syrup. Lovely recipe, thanks!
Sounds yummy!! Thanks Maria!
I just made these and they turned out amazing!! So soft and pillowy! They took a couple of minutes longer to brown the tops, (probably my oven) but then I brushed the butter on them and back in for a couple more minutes. Perfect!! I am beside myself, lol And so easy!
Thanks so much Kim, this made me smile! So glad you enjoyed these!
Hello, One your biscuit recipe you have 1 tea salt, that I understand. But on the rest it says T for the measurements. I’m assuming it means tablespoon. I would normally assume that T means teaspoon (TSP) but I think you mean tablespoon (TBSP). I am going to make these this morning , we’ll see how they turn out. Could you please clarify the measurements? Wish me luck.
Hello Dianne! I am sorry this has caused confusion for you and will have it fixed as soon as I can! It is 1 teaspoon Of salt. Thank you for your contact! Hope you enjoy! ❤️
I would love to make these tonight. Do you use all purpose or self rising flour?
Hi Amber, you will need all purpose flour 😊
I made these tonight and they were amazing! Thank you for sharing the recipe!!
So glad you like these Joanna! Thanks for stopping back in and letting me know!
This recipe was great – I added cream cheese and decreased the shortening – they are delicious. This will be my go to biscuit!
Hi–I’m eager to try this recipe but I have a question:
At the top of the recipe, it states — “Servings: 5”
At the bottom I see — “Notes This recipe makes around 9-10 large Biscuits.”
I’m guessing that it would make 9 or 10 biscuits if the ingredients are doubled?
Hi Alexis! This recipe does yield 9-10 Biscuits as is.The 5 servings would assume that an adult would eat two biscuits. We are a family of 5 but 3 children and last week they all got ate but 2 which got warmed up later and ate! We may be larger eaters then some… 🤦🏼♀️ Hope this is helpful and you give these favorites of ours a try!
Love them! Quick, easy and soft. This will be one of my “go to” recipes. Thank you!
Can these be made ahead and frozen?
Hi Brenda, I apologize for the huge delay. To answer your question, I have froze these on a pan in the freezer for a couple hour then vacuumed sealed them for later use. You will have to add some time to the baking process if frozen though. Hope this helps!
These were so good and SO easy!! 10/10
